What the doctor does
- Asks about the symptoms, when they started, medicines already given and medical history.
- Examines your child: temperature, throat, ears, lungs, tummy, skin and hydration.
- Explains the diagnosis in simple terms.
- Writes a prescription adjusted to your child’s age and weight.
- Tells you what to watch for and when to call back.
- Refers you to a specialist, tests or a hospital emergency department if needed.
Before the doctor arrives
- Your child’s health record or vaccination booklet.
- Temperature readings with times.
- Medicines already given, with doses and times.
- Your child’s weight, if known.
Life-threatening emergency: call 141
- Your child is breathing very fast or with difficulty, or their lips turn blue.
- They have a seizure, lose consciousness, or are very floppy and hard to wake.
- Red or purple spots appear and do not fade when you press on them.
- They stop drinking, barely pass urine and have sunken eyes: signs of severe dehydration.
- They swallowed a toxic product or medicine, or had a bad fall on the head.
